Which Old Handheld Games and Series Do We Recommend?

Here are the old handheld games and series we recommend at The Old School Game Vault, and why.

▶ Game Boy: Tetris, Wario, and the Start of Pokemon

Two things come to mind: a portable Nintendo and Tetris. At the time, the Game Boy felt like having a little Nintendo console you could take anywhere. Combined with Tetris, it was mind-blowing.

There are a lot of carryover games between the NES library and the Game Boy. One series that wasn’t on the NES that we’d recommend is Wario. Operation C was a Contra spin-off, and TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan continued the ever-popular Turtles series.

Then there’s the Final Fantasy Legend series and Final Fantasy Adventure. And who can forget Kirby’s Dream Land and our introduction to the world of Pokemon with Red, Blue, and Yellow?

▶ Game Boy Color: Zelda, Pokemon Crystal, and Mega Man

I really enjoy the three The Legend of Zelda entries on the Game Boy Color: Link’s Awakening DX, Oracle of Seasons, and Oracle of Ages. These are really well done games that follow the working formula from the original.

The Pokemon library grew even further on the Game Boy Color, but Pokemon Crystal is the one that stands out. If you’re shopping for one, here’s how to tell if Pokemon Crystal is real.

Mega Man Xtreme is a solid series, and I had a blast playing games like Pocket Bomberman.

▶ Game Boy Advance: Pokemon, Castlevania, and RPGs

The world of Pokemon exploded on the GBA with Emerald, LeafGreen, and FireRed, among others. Before you buy, check out how to spot a fake Pokemon Emerald.

If you’re into retro handheld gaming, the Game Boy Advance library is filled with great titles and franchises. Just look at the Mega Man series, which had more than a dozen games to choose from. Castlevania also made a huge leap with Circle of the Moon and Aria of Sorrow.

If you’re into RPGs, the library has Final Fantasy I and II, IV, V, and VI, and the GBA is where Fire Emblem first came to the U.S. Golden Sun and Shining Force round out a great RPG lineup.

▶ PS Vita: Uncharted, Persona, and HD Collections

The Vita continued some great series and expanded on them. We really like the Uncharted series on the PS3, and the Vita gave us Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Persona got a great new version with Persona 4 Golden.

The Vita offers superior graphics, which makes it a console to buy, and since it doesn’t use UMD discs, you won’t run into those annoying UMD disc read errors.

With the Vita, you can find the great series you love, like LittleBigPlanet, Sly Cooper, the God of War Collection, and the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.
