The Old School Game Vault sells used Sega games and consoles at reasonable prices. Pick up Sonic the Hedgehog, NIGHTS into Dreams, The House of the Dead, Shenmue, NBA Jam and a system to go with them.
Every Sega game we sell has been tested and works. No stock photos; you see exactly what you're buying. We don't inflate our prices like some retro game stores, so what you pay is what the game is actually worth.
Here are the old Sega games and series we recommend at The Old School Game Vault, and why.
No game or mascot defined early ’90s gaming quite like the emergence of Sonic the Hedgehog. On the Genesis, a few other games quickly come to mind, starting with Altered Beast, which came with the console back in the day.
I spent a lot of time playing the likes of Madden ’93 and NBA Live 96 on the Genesis, but I always had fun playing Mutant League Football for a cool change of pace.
The Genesis also had a good library of shmups like Elemental Master and M.U.S.H.A. Then the Phantasy Star series and Shining in the Darkness round out the RPG genre.
We can’t start this section without mentioning Snatcher, the game directed by Hideo Kojima. Yes, this is the same mastermind behind the Metal Gear series.
For the RPG fans, Lunar made two entries on the Sega CD with Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar: Eternal Blue. Final Fight CD deserves some attention too, since I first found this series on the SNES. Let’s round out this list with Robo Aleste, a fun shoot ’em up.
If you’re powering up your Sega CD for the first time in a while, you may need to format the internal RAM. Formatting erases any saved games, so read how to format your Sega CD internal RAM before you start.
The Sega 32X has a very small library. Of course, NBA Jam Tournament Edition comes to mind, followed by Doom, which was all the rage back in the day for this console.
I know every time we think of Sega we think of Sonic, but Knuckles’ Chaotix was a fun entry. One of my favorite lesser-known games has to be Kolibri, a unique shoot ’em up for the library.
If you want some history while you’re here, I wrote an article on how Sega destroyed the 32X in less than a year.
NiGHTS into Dreams is the first thing that comes to mind. The unique 3D controller and those graphics were great at the time.
The Sega Saturn has a great library, but I might say it’s an expensive one. If you’re into RPGs, there are a bunch to choose from. Shining Wisdom, Shining the Holy Ark, and Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean all come to mind.
For shooters, Scud: The Disposable Assassin and The House of the Dead are fun light gun games, followed by Darius Gaiden and Galactic Attack if you’re into the classic shmup style.
We wrote a Sega Saturn vs. Dreamcast comparison that goes into more detail about the Saturn.
The Dreamcast is certainly an underrated console that deserved better. A few games that immediately come to mind are Jet Grind Radio and Crazy Taxi. They’re both super fun, and you can spend hours playing them.
I can’t mention the Dreamcast without saying it had the best arcade port of Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Sorry, PS2 fanboys. Not to mention the Power Stone series.
Light gun games were limited on the Dreamcast, but The House of the Dead 2 is great multiplayer gun-blasting action.
The genre I really enjoyed on the Dreamcast was shmups. The Giga Wing series, Gunbird 2, and Bangai-O are great games for the genre.
