Do my games need to include the box and manual?Video Game Cartridges Selling Policy at The Old School Game Vault

Short Answer: It depends on the platform. For the following game cartridges, we do not require the original box or manual. Prices listed on our site are for the cartridge only:

  • Nintendo NES
  • Super Nintendo (SNES)
  • Nintendo 64
  • Sega Genesis, Master System, 32X
  • Nintendo Virtual Boy
  • Original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance
  • Atari 7800, Atari Jaguar, Atari Lynx
  • Neo Geo Pocket

For the systems below, we do require the original box and manual to receive full value. Here’s how quotes are adjusted if items are incomplete:

  • Nintendo DS & 3DS
    Cartridge only (loose): -50% deduction
With case but missing manual: -30% deduction
  • Nintendo Switch (we understand many do not include manuals)
    Cartridge only (loose): -50% deduction
With case but no manual: -30% deduction
  • PlayStation Vita (manuals often not included from factory)
    Cartridge only (loose): -50% deduction
  • TurboGrafx-16
    Cartridge only (loose): -50% deduction
With case but missing manual: -40% deduction

Can my cartridge have a name written in marker?

  • ✅ Yes. A name or small number written in marker is fine—no value will be deducted.
  • 🚫 However, if the cartridge is heavily colored or completely marked up, it will be rejected.

Are stickers on the cartridge okay?

  • ✅ Yes, as long as the sticker doesn’t cover or damage the game’s original label.
  • If the game label is obstructed, unreadable, or damaged by a sticker, we may have to reject the item.
  • Not sure? Feel free to email us a photo—we’d be happy to take a look before you send it in.

I haven’t tested my games in years—Is that okay?

  • ✅ Yes! We clean the contacts on every cartridge and can usually get 90% of old games to work. No need to worry if you don’t have a way to test them.

The game label is torn—Will you still buy it?

  • ❌ Unfortunately, no. Games with badly torn end labels or front labels will be rejected.
  • We need the label intact to verify authenticity and to be in a sellable condition.
